When I create, what inspires me the most is the matter from which the piece emerges.

Katarzyna Rysiak’s installation Define is a degree piece which was created in the Illustration Studio at the Faculty of Graphic Arts. The diploma examination took place in February 2012, in a student gallery called Turbo. The Define project is an image of a poem by Marcin Cecko, drawn into space with accompanying sound and the rough surface of a paper-zine. The word reclaims its shape and becomes the source of an image. The image, treated as a record of sound, resonates within the gallery walls. A multidimensional continuum arises, unveiling the essence of poetic thinking, where each word means something else. The shape of the poet’s thoughts committed to words is different. The shape of a poem seen many times as an image is different. The space of this image reproduced as sound is different. Different is also the time-space continuum of the interior, in which we experience simultaneity of different forms of the word, which was in the beginning. However, none of these forms is ultimate, just like our immersion in the Define installation is temporary. The thrilling experience of returning to the source of meaning remains, and a joyful amazement with the richness of a single poem.
